44 King Street

Socialites, hip corporate types, and plain casuals adorn this bustling sophisticated hangout — for a meal, a snack, or just good coffee, roasted on-site. The interior is a mix of industrial design and European cafe, with dark timber tables, exposed air ducts, and windows onto the street.

The open kitchen produces all its own bread and pastries, and has a weekly changing menu with some weird and wonderful choices — such as fennel-roasted duck with paella of Valencia, or Cajun pink snapper with sweet-potato frites and avocado sour cream. The menu helpfully lists wine suggestions for each dish, and offers over 70 wines by the glass from around A$8 (US$6.40/UKĀ£3.30), and taster glasses too. There’s also a good beer selection.
